A Teleparty alternative without an extension

Cliqroom is a free Teleparty alternative for watch parties built around supported media links. Friends join through a browser link, with a shared queue and text chat, without installing a Cliqroom extension.

Create a free room

Use Cliqroom for supported links in a browser room. For subscription streaming, check that your chosen tool explicitly supports the service and everyone’s devices.

  • Queue supported links beside text chat

Match the tool to the streaming service

An extension or a browser room

Teleparty’s support guide lists desktop extensions for Chrome, Edge, and Opera, plus an Android app. Participants install the extension or use its app. Cliqroom opens as a web app for its supported media players, so friends can join without a Cliqroom installation.

YouTube and subscription streaming need different checks

Teleparty supports YouTube as well as subscription streaming services; it is not limited to Netflix. Its support guide says each participant needs access to the service being watched. Both tools can be options for a YouTube watch party, while Netflix or Disney+ needs a tool with explicit support for that service.

Start with a supported video

Try a short public YouTube video with one friend before planning a full watch party. It lets you check the room link and playback on the browsers you will use.

  1. Create the room. Open Cliqroom and choose Create room. No Cliqroom account or extension is needed.
  2. Add the video. Paste the YouTube link into the media field and select its preview to add it to the queue.
  3. Invite your friend. Copy the room link from the invite dialog and send it to them. They open it in their browser.
  4. Check playback and controls. Start the video, click or tap play if needed, and check shared play and pause before adding more links.

A Netflix URL is a different workflow

Cliqroom has players for YouTube, Twitch, Vimeo, Dailymotion, and SoundCloud, plus direct media URLs that your browser can play. Spotify playback is currently unavailable. Choose a supported link and check that everyone can access it.

Netflix and Disney+ have no native Cliqroom player. Screen sharing is separate from native playback, and protected capture or audio may fail. For those services, check a tool that explicitly supports the streaming service, its account requirements, and the devices in your group.

Check playback before inviting the whole group

If a video fails, check whether each friend can play it on the source site. Some videos cannot play in embedded players; YouTube’s documentation describes errors when an owner blocks embedding. Try another embeddable video if that is the issue.

If the player is paused or silent, click or tap play and check its volume. If someone buffers, pause while they check their connection. Shared playback controls cannot remove access restrictions or guarantee identical timing on every connection.
